Santa Cruz Mayor Makes Ceremonial First Throw at San Lorenzo Park

San Lorenzo Park’s new Bridge-to-Bridge 9-hole disc golf course is now open! Santa Cruz Mayor Don Lane came out to make the ceremonial first throw this week. Tee areas are now installed, the baskets are in, and the fairways are cleared. This is a shorter course (200′ or less on every hole) that is friendly to beginners and also makes for great upshot practice for experienced players. All holes are par 3. Come out and see how many birdies you can score!

The DeLaveaga Disc Golf Club and Santa Cruz City Parks & Recreation presents

We are very excited to announce this inaugural event co-sponsored by the City of Santa Cruz.  The new nine hole course at San Lorenzo Park is not only a great place to get in a quick round on your lunch break, but it’s also the perfect venue to hold teaching clinics!

The focus of this festival is FUN!

This is a perfect opportunity to invite all of your friends and neighbors out to learn more about Disc Golf and how to play the game.  We will be holding clinics all day long and there will be plenty of experienced players on hand to offer expert advice.

Clinics: 10am; 11am; 12noon; 1pm; 2pm

Setting the course record

There is no official course record score at this time.  After the festival is over – there WILL BE!  You can play the course as many times as you want to get your best score for a 9 hole round and an 18 hole round.  Not happy with your score?  Play it again!

Ring of Fire

“Ring of Fire” is when many people throw a disc at the same basket at the same time.  This will be ongoing throughout the day at 10:30; 11:30; 12:30; 1:30 and 2:30  Prizes will be awarded to all winners!

Mini Disc Golf

Mark Karleskind will be setting up a 9 hole “mini” disc golf course.  Just like regular Disc Golf, you navigate the course trying to get the lowest score possible playing with miniature discs.  You can play it as many times as you want.  It’s a lot of fun and great for kids!

More events and activities may be added so check back here frequently for more information!

DDGC breaks ground on new 9-hole short course in downtown Santa Cruz

In cooperation with the city of Santa Cruz, the club has begun construction of a 9-hole short course (max hole length is 200 ft) at San Lorenzo Park, which will play from Water St bridge to the canal near Soquel bridge. The city hopes that this new “Bridge-to-Bridge” course will bring disc golfers and other park users into the area, in order to help mitigate illegal activities that currently take place along that stretch of the riverfront. The course is beautiful, technical, and designed so that it can be played in a very short time (25-35 minutes) for those seeking a quick practice round. The smaller distances at this course will also be more accommodating to beginning players than the championship layouts at DeLaveaga.

Daisy Chains Ladies Tournament

The 1st Annual Daisy Chains Ladies-Only Disc Golf Tournament was held 12-13 May (Sat-Sun) at Pinto Lake Championship Disc Golf Course, in Watsonville (home of the 2011 Pro Worlds finals).

Daisy Chains is a mixture of singles and team play. A special 18-hole layout is installed at Pinto Lake just for this tournament. Teams are formalized on the day the tournament begins, but ladies are encouraged to gather other lady disc golfers from their home courses to plan ahead if they wish to participate in the team portion of the event. Daisy Chains is part of the PDGA Womens Global Event (WGE), including over 600 women playing around the world and competing with one another on the same day! However, women must sign up for the WGE separately at PDGA.COM (click here to register for WGE at The WGE includes a great players package, which is in addition to the great players pack provided to players who register for Daisy Chains.

Daisy Chains is seeking sponsors and volunteers to help support the tournament. A particularly fun sponsorship option is to become a score-keeper (only $20, which helps to offset provided meals and other expenses). If you’re interested in this or any other kind of sponsorship for this inaugural women’s disc golf tournament, please contact tournament director Christine Hernlund via the PDGA.COM event page.

Daisy Chains course configuration preview tournament will be held at Pinto Lake on Saturday, 21 April, sign-in at 11AM. Players can enter this preview tournament and compete for cash ($10 entry fee/player), or compete as part of a Pinto Lake DGC bag tag round ($20/bag tag), or do both simultaneously!

DDGC Raises Funds to Support UCSC Disc Golf Team

The DDGC March Monthly Tournament was a fundraiser to help send the UCSC Disc Golf Team to the Nationals. The UCSC Disc Golf Team was able to raise $500 in donations from this event. At the West Coast College Open the UCSC team placed third which clinched a qualifying bid for the Collegiate National Championships at the Hippodrome facility in South Carolina. Because they are all starving college students the DeLeaveaga Disc Golf Club is helping fund their travel expenses for this event, allowing them to represent Santa Cruuuuuuuz in the Championships!

DeLaveaga Ladies League Launches 2012 Series

Lady disc golfers in the Santa Cruz area fired up another Sunday league series that began on Sunday 19 February. The DeLaveaga Ladies League initially ran from 9AM-Noon for six consecutive Sundays with a 25 March finale, however, they had so much fun that they are continuing to play every Sunday! The league has always been free to join and often receives lady-oriented prizes and other support from local sponsors. All women were welcome to attend, regardless of experience, new players are especially encouraged to join! Participants include ladies of all ages and with widely varying experience levels, from beginners to world champions who are working to build the sport for women. Don’t be shy ladies! Come out and play, and have fun!

DDGC Remembers “Slingshot” Steve Jones

Steve Jones (March 18, 1946 – November 10, 2011), aka “Slingshot,” was a special part of the DeLaveaga Disc Golf Course and community, a part of our disc golf family. The club sends its condolences to all of Steve’s family and friends, and plans to remember Steve in a ceremony to be held on Saturday, December 3, immediately following the DDGC monthly tournament. 1. hello to every one – hope yous had a great time – back from parents 12lbs heavier a`hhh just back from tenerefe weather crap , all the best for the comming year – michael

  2. I find the area sacred and incredible fun relaxation at its best. A Charity Tournament is awesome. I saw no request or postings at the tees for a closed course, so I was playing through with respect to the crowd untill a young man said I should not be there. I was rude to the point of insulting any charity represented, and myself. Please mark at all tees if there is a tournament and the course is closed. cheers

  3. Looking for recommended hotel to stay at for The “Steady” Ed Memorial Masters Cup AM weekend.

  4. I’m planning to TD a fundraiser tourney the same weekend as the Master’s Cup. This would be taking place in Eugene, OR. The reason for this email is that I was curious as to whether the Master’s Cup will have any video coverage (possibly disc golf planet TV or your local Disc Masters crew)? I am a huge Master’s Cup fan (I’ve been witness to it on a handful of occasions), and would like help bring exposure to the tourney and Dela, by running our tournament in conjunction with it.
I would like to offer our tournament players an interesting twist to the tournament format, which would entail our players voting for the disc golf pro who will throw the best round on Sat. or Sun. of the Master’s Cup. The round score of the pro of their choosing will be added to their own tournament total.
This tourney of ours will be taking place in the most centrally located park in Eugene, and it is being designed in such a way that it will satisfy all skill levels and competitive drives. It will be great exposure for disc golf here locally, and I’d like feature as much Master’s Cup footage and/or media coverage, because I think this addition will show how far disc golf has come for those folks who don’t know. Not everyone can make it down to Santa Cruz in May, but maybe this will plant a seed for folks to visit Dela and/or the Master’s Cup in the future. If there is to be no live coverage, then I’m sure we could just keep eye on the live scoring happening on the PDGA website. If this is our only option, I’d love to be playing footage from past Master’s Cups at tournament central as a replacement for the live coverage.

Thank you for any and all information/resources you can bring to the table.

My name is Chris Brown… I am working on a disc golf course renovation we are calling ‘The Lagoon Valley Revival.’ The course being renovated is in Vacaville, CA. I talked to Pat Brown yesterday about ideas on where we can pick up a used practice basket and he referred me to your club. Our funds are limited as we are just getting started as an organization; however, moral and motivation is high! Lagoon Valley offers 27 holes of diversity and has limitless potential! If someone could let me know who I should talk to about the practice basket it’d be much appreciated… Thank you and we hope to see you out at the Lagoon sometime soon!
